ACT e-bike laws (October 2026): Canberra rules, bus racks and light rail

In-update · 4 na minutong basahin

Canberra is one of Australia’s easiest cities to ride, with bus racks and bikes on light rail. A plain-English summary — general information, not legal advice.

The short version

  • Power: up to 250 W (EPAC), or a 200 W power-assisted pedal cycle.
  • Assistance stops at 25 km/h while pedalling, and at 6 km/h if you aren’t pedalling.
  • Helmet: required, and stick to speed limits.
  • Footpaths and shared paths: allowed. Keep left and give way to pedestrians.
  • Buses: most have front racks for two bikes. Light rail: e-bikes allowed sa the racks.
  • Petrol bikes and minibikes are banned on all ACT roads and paths.
  • EPAC: motor up to 250 W, cutting out at 25 km/h while pedalling and at 6 km/h without pedalling.
  • Power-assisted pedal cycle: motor up to 200 W, pedalling required at any speed, adjustable seat, under 50 kg with battery.

Devices over these limits may be motor vehicles that need registration and a licence — otherwise they are for private property only.

Buses and light rail

  • Buses: over 90% of Transport Canberra buses have front racks for two bikes (up to 25 kg each), first come, first served. Fold-up bikes can go on board at the driver’s discretion.
  • Light rail: bikes and e-bikes go sa the wall-mounted racks (wheels 20–29 inch, tyres up to 63 mm, up to 25 kg). No tandems, tricycles, fat bikes, petrol bikes, or e-bikes with fixed food-delivery boxes. Shared e-bikes such as Lime aren’t allowed.

Enforcement

In June 2026 ACT Policing ran a targeted operation on anti-social use of e-bikes, e-scooters and e-motorcycles, warning that trail bikes or modified e-bikes would be seized and charges laid where use is illegal.

Mga e-bike ng Shared

Lime began running shared e-scooters and e-bikes sa Canberra in April 2026. Riders must be 16 or older to use the shared scheme.
