Tasmania e-bike laws (October 2026): 250 W, helmets and no e-bikes on Metro buses

In-update · 4 na minutong basahin

Tasmania follows the national pedal-assist rules. A plain-English summary — general information, not legal advice.

The short version

  • Power: up to 250 W continuous (EPAC), or a 200 W pedal-assisted bicycle under 50 kg.
  • Assistance only while pedalling, reduced above 6 km/h and cut off at 25 km/h. Walk-assist only to 6 km/h.
  • No licence or registration for a compliant e-bike. No minimum age is set.
  • Helmet: an approved helmet meeting AS/NZS 2063.
  • Footpaths: compliant e-bikes can generally use footpaths, roads, bike lanes and shared paths unless bikes are prohibited.
  • No e-bikes on Metro Tasmania buses.
  • EPAC: maximum continuous rated power 250 W, assistance only while pedalling and cut off at 25 km/h.
  • Pedal-assisted bicycle: auxiliary motor up to 200 W, under 50 kg.

Riding at full speed on a throttle without pedalling is a sign of an illegal e-bike. Since 1 July 2024, petrol-powered bicycles are treated as motorcycles and must be registered.

Buses

Metro Tasmania does not allow e-bikes, e-scooters or similar battery-powered vehicles on its buses. Standard bikes are only allowed if they fold sa half and fit in the luggage rack.

Fines and seizure

An e-bike over the power or speed limits may be treated as an unregistered, uninsured motor vehicle. The Government warns of significant penalties, and the device may be seized.

What might change

Tasmania consulted on e-bike rules (speed, power, rider age and safety requirements) sa 2024. The Government said no currently legal e-bike would be made illegal. No decision had been published as of October 2026.

Where to ride
