Which e-bike? A quick guide to the styles

Commuter and hybrid

For riding to work and around town. Look for mudguards, a rack, lights and a 400–600 Wh battery. A mid-drive motor feels natural on hills; a rear hub is simpler and cheaper.

Step-through

Easy to get on and off — great if you stop often or ride sa work clothes. Same parts as a commuter.

Natitiklop

Fits sa a car boot, on the train or under a desk. Smaller wheels and batteries; check the folded size and the weight before you buy.

Cargo

Carries kids, shopping or deliveries. Longer frames, strong motors and big batteries. Check the rated load and that the brakes are up to it.

Pang-bundok (e-MTB)

Built for trails: suspension, wide tyres and powerful mid-drive motors. Off-road wear adds up — ask about service history.

Fat tyre

Big, soft tyres for sand and gravel. Many fat-tyre bikes sold online have motors well over 250 W and are not road legal — check the rules.
