E-bike stolen? What to do, step by step

Updated 9 October 2026 · 4 min read

Having your e-bike stolen is awful. Acting quickly gives you the best chance of getting it back. Here is what to do, in order.

1. Report it to the police

  • If the theft is happening now, or anyone is in danger, call 000.
  • Otherwise report it through your state police’s online reporting or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
  • Give them the frame serial number, make, model, colour, photos and any distinguishing marks. Ask for a police report or event number — you will need it for insurance.

2. Flag it on EbikeMate

If your bike has an EbikeMate Bike Passport, open My bikes, choose the bike and tap Report stolen or lost. Its public check result changes straight away, and anyone who tries to list that serial on EbikeMate is stopped before the ad goes live.

Not registered yet? You can still register it now with your proof of ownership — your receipt and photos — and then report it stolen.

3. Watch the marketplaces

  • Check online marketplaces and classifieds in your area for the next few weeks — search for your make and model.
  • If you think you have found your bike, do not try to get it back yourself. Give the listing link and your police event number to the police.

4. Tell your insurer

If your bike is covered by home contents or bike insurance, contact your insurer with the police event number, your receipt and photos.

5. If it comes back

Mark it as recovered on its Bike Passport so its status returns to normal, and let the police know.

EbikeMate is an independent private platform. A stolen flag on EbikeMate does not replace a police report — always report the theft to police first.

Where are you?

Your postcode decides what you can see. Batteries are pickup only, so they only show to buyers near the seller, and some items are not shown in every state.
