Battery & charger safety check

Tell us about your battery and charger. We’ll flag warning signs, mismatches and what to do next. We can never tell you a battery is safe — only what looks wrong.

Safe charging

  • Charge in an open area like a garage or shed, away from exits — not in bedrooms or living areas.
  • Charge on a hard surface that can’t burn, like concrete or tiles, with nothing flammable around it.
  • Don’t charge while you’re asleep or away from home, and unplug once it’s full.
  • Have a working smoke or heat alarm where you charge and store it.
  • Only use the charger that came with the battery, or the maker’s approved replacement.
  • Never charge a battery that is swollen, leaking, damaged, overheated or has been in water.

From Fire and Rescue NSW guidance.

Replacing a battery

  • Buy from the bike or motor maker, or an authorised dealer, so the voltage, connector and battery management system match.
  • Avoid unbranded or uncertified packs and “universal” chargers.
  • Have a shop fit and test it, and record the new battery’s serial in your Bike Passport.
  • Rough planning figure: a brand-name replacement often costs around $1.50–$2.50 per Wh fitted (so $750–$1,250 for 500 Wh). Get a real quote.

Recalls

Search the national recalls list for your battery, charger and bike. Our own Recall Centre is coming: owners of registered bikes will be told automatically.

Recycling an old battery

Undamaged e-bike batteries can go to a B-cycle drop-off point (5 kg limit; call ahead if over 1 kg). Damaged batteries must not go to drop-off points or any bin — ask your council.

Keep your battery’s details with the bike

Record the battery and charger serials in your free Bike Passport — a stolen battery can then be checked on its own.

Where are you?

Your postcode decides what you can see. Batteries are pickup only, so they only show to buyers near the seller, and some items are not shown in every state.
