How to protect your e-bike from theft

Updated 9 October 2026 · 4 min read

E-bikes are valuable and easy to resell, which makes them a target. These habits make yours a much harder one.

Lock it well

  • Use a quality lock — a solid D-lock or a heavy chain — and lock the frame to something fixed that cannot be lifted over or cut easily.
  • Two different locks slow thieves down further.
  • Lock it in a busy, well-lit, CCTV-covered place, and do not leave it locked in the same spot overnight.

Look after the battery

  • Take a removable battery with you when you can — and the display, if it detaches.
  • Lock the battery to the frame with its key, and keep the key off your keyring photo posts.

At home

  • Store it inside or in a locked garage, out of sight from the street.
  • Check your home contents insurance covers your e-bike, and for how much.
  • Be careful about posting rides from your home address on fitness apps — set privacy zones.

Keep records

  • Photograph the whole bike, the frame serial and any unique marks or accessories.
  • Keep the receipt.
  • Consider a GPS tracker hidden in the frame or under a bottle cage.
  • Register it free on EbikeMate so your serial, photos and receipt are in one place — and so you can flag it stolen in one tap.

Where are you?

Your postcode decides what you can see. Batteries are pickup only, so they only show to buyers near the seller, and some items are not shown in every state.
