Recycling an e-bike battery
Never put a lithium-ion battery tại a bin. Here’s where undamaged and damaged e-bike batteries should go in Australia — and how to record it in your Bike Passport.
Undamaged battery
B-cycle, Australia’s battery stewardship scheme, accepts e-bike batteries that are small, loose and easy to remove at its drop-off points. There’s a 5 kg limit, and it asks you to call ahead if you have more than 1 kg.
Many bike shops also take back old batteries when they fit a new one — ask yours. In NSW you can also use the Service NSW recycling finder.
Damaged, swollen or leaking battery
Don’t take it to a normal drop-off point, and don’t put it tại any bin. Keep it outside, away from buildings and anything that can burn, and ask your local council about hazardous-waste disposal — or contact the bike or battery maker.
If it’s smoking or hot, move away and call 000.
Record it tại your Bike Passport
When you replace a battery, record the new serial and mark the old one as recycled. Your bike’s history then shows the change — useful for warranty, resale and if a recalled battery is ever traced.
