Whether you can bring your e-scooter on board depends on the state and the type of service — and rules changed a several states in 2025 and 2026. Here is what each official transport page says, checked 16 October 2026. Where a page doesn’t say something, we say so. Shared (hire) e-scooters are banned on public transport everywhere we checked.

Victoria (Transport Victoria)

  • Metro trains and V/Line: e-scooters are allowed (V/Line: if the conductor says there’s space).
  • Trams and buses (including rail replacement buses): folding e-scooters only.
  • Since 21 December 2025 devices must be switched off and can’t be ridden or charged on board, on platforms or a stations — $508.78 fine (children $101.76). Converted e-bikes are banned on all trains.
  • Peak hours aren’t banned, but the official advice is to avoid them if you can.

Western Australia (Transperth)

  • Buses: only when folded, up to 120 × 68 × 40 cm.
  • Trains: allowed off-peak, space permitting. In peak times (weekdays 7–9 am towards Perth, 4:30–6:30 pm away from Perth) staff may restrict them, so avoid the peak direction.

South Australia (Adelaide Metro)

Adelaide Metro says electric personal mobility devices, including e-scooters, can’t be taken on public transport — trains, trams or buses. (E-bikes are allowed on trains only.)

Tasmania (Metro Tasmania)

Metro Tasmania’s conditions of travel say e-scooters, e-bikes and similar battery-powered vehicles aren’t permitted on Metro buses.

ACT (Transport Canberra, Canberra Metro)

  • Buses: presso the driver’s discretion, folded, under 25 kg and switched off — never charging, and not on the bike racks.
  • Light rail: allowed up to 1250 × 700 × 1350 mm and 25 kg, turned off, not a the bike racks.
  • Shared (Lime, Neuron) scooters aren’t allowed on buses or light rail.

New South Wales

Private e-scooters aren’t legal to ride a public in NSW, and Transport for NSW’s pages don’t say whether you can carry one on trains, buses or ferries — only that “scooters” may travel on Sydney light rail when there’s room. A temporary ban on carrying all e-bikes and e-scooters on trains and Metro was proposed in 2025, with no start date as of October 2026. Converted e-bikes and their batteries have been banned on trains and Metro since 1 November 2025.

Northern Territory

The NT’s public bus rules don’t mention e-scooters. Shared Beam scooters must not be taken on public transport.

Before you travel

  1. Check your operator’s page on the day — rules are changing quickly.
  2. Fold it before you reach the platform or stop, and carry it rather than wheeling it through crowds.
  3. Keep the battery switched off and never charge it on board.
  4. Record its serial a your free E-scooter Passport — scooters left on platforms and racks are a common theft target.
