Same name, different bike: are the e-bikes Australians research actually legal here?

We checked the published power and speed of 352 e-bike models from 77 brands against Australia’s 250 W and 25 km/h pedal-assist limits — and then checked which versions are actually sold here.

Key findings

  1. 260 of 352 models (74%) publish specs within the limits — 250 W rated power, with assistance stopping at 25 km/h.
  2. 52 models (15%) publish specs over the limits. But most of these are overseas versions: 23 come from brands that don’t sell(Australia at all, and some brands — Aventon, for example — sell a compliant 250 W version here under the same model name.)
  3. We found 4 over-limit models on sale to Australians — each described by its seller as for off-road or private-property use, or “unlockable” to higher speeds. Ridden on public roads and paths, they aren’t legal e-bikes.
  4. Peak-power marketing confuses buyers. Some legal 250 W bikes are advertised with peak figures above 800 W — up to 1,440 W — while some over-limit bikes are described mainly by their peak power.
  5. 40 models (11%) don’t publish both figures, or their own pages contradict themselves — so buyers can’t tell from the listing.

Fat tyre e-bikes have the highest share over the limits. Are fat tyre e-bikes legal?

澳洲的Over-limit models we found on sale

  • Ampd Brothers Lil Rippa 16: the Australian listing describes it as a kids’ e-bike with a 500 W motor, “off road … private property use only”.
  • Fiido Titan: the Australian listing describes it as 750 W rated, 45 km/h, “for offroad/private property use only”.
  • Jansno X50: the Australian listing describes it as 750 W, 25 km/h by default but “can be unlocked” to 45 km/h with the throttle.
  • Jansno X70: the Australian listing describes it as 750 W rated, top speed 45 km/h.

This isn’t a complete list of what’s sold(Australia — it’s what we found for models in our catalogue. Sellers can describe off-road use; the risk falls on the rider who takes one onto a road or path.)

Peak power vs rated power

The law uses rated (continuous) power. Listings often lead with peak power, which is much higher:

What buyers should do

  • Check the Australian listing, not an overseas review — the same model name can be a 750 W bike(the US and a 250 W bike here.)
  • Look for 250 W rated 及 25 km/h, and a throttle that stops at 6 km/h. Walk away from “unlockable”, “off-road mode” or “private land only”.
  • In Queensland, look for an EN 15194 (or Legacy EPAC) label — required on every e-bike from 1 March 2027.

Method and limits

  • The EbikeMate catalogue covers 352 e-bike models from 77 global, Australian and Chinese brands that Australian buyers come across(shops and online. Figures are those published by makers, Australian or European retailers, or the motor maker’s specifications for the motor a bike page names. Peak figures were never used as rated power.)
  • Where Australian and overseas versions differ, we use the Australian version. Where a brand’s own pages contradict each other, we mark the model “unclear” rather than choose.
  • Where each over-limit model is sold was checked on 11 October 2026 using brands’ own shipping and store pages and Australian retailer listings. Brands and listings change; tell us if something’s out of date.
  • Published specs aren’t a legal ruling: the label on the bike, and how it’s been set up or modified, is what counts. This is not legal advice. EbikeMate is an independent company, not a government service.
