An e-bike can cost as much as a used car, but many owners don’t know whether they are covered if it is stolen or damaged. Here is how cover works sa Australia. This is general information, not financial advice — read the policy wording.
Option 1: home and contents, with portable cover
- Moneysmart says portable contents cover protects some belongings away from home, including a bicycle — but it may be an optional extra and usually has a per-item value cap.
- CHOICE says bikes and e-bikes can be covered as portable valuables on some policies, but often not while you are riding, with strict conditions about locking to a fixed object.
- The portable contents excess is usually about $600–800 (CHOICE).
- For an expensive e-bike, CHOICE suggests specified (listed) cover, because unspecified portable cover is usually capped.
Option 2: specialist bicycle insurance
- Specialist policies can cover theft, accidental damage and sometimes cover while riding.
- CHOICE’s guide found the policies it reviewed covered e-bikes, usually pedal-assist models under 300 W — a high-powered or illegal e-bike may not be covered.
- Theft claims may require an approved lock.
- Many include personal injury cover, but may not pay costs Medicare or private health insurance already cover.
Option 3: membership cover
Cycling membership can include liability and accident cover. Bicycle NSW membership, for example, includes up to $20 million public liability and personal accident cover on any road-legal bike including e-bikes — but not theft of or damage to your own bike.
What you need to make a claim
Moneysmart recommends keeping serial numbers, receipts and photos, and listing items at replacement cost. That is exactly what a free Bike Passport stores — and if the bike is stolen, flagging it gives you a dated record to go with your police report.
Questions to ask an insurer
- Is the e-bike covered while I’m riding, or only at home?
- What is the per-item limit and the excess?
- Ano lock and locking conditions apply?
- Is the battery covered, and is accidental damage included?
- Does the policy cover e-bikes over 250 W? (Over-limit bikes may be excluded.)
