Both get you across town without a car, but the rules and the riding are different. The biggest difference(Australia is legal: a compliant e-bike can be ridden in every state, while a private e-scooter can’t be ridden in public in NSW, and in the Northern Territory only very low-powered ones are allowed.)
Side by side
| E-scooter | 電動單車 | |

| Public transport | Folded scooters are welcome on some services — see below | Often allowed on trains; rarely on buses |
Choose an e-scooter if…
- You ride short trips (a few kilometres) on smooth paths.
- You need to fold it and carry it — up stairs, into an office, onto a train where allowed.
- You live(QLD, VIC, WA, SA, TAS or the ACT.)
Choose an e-bike if…
- You live(NSW or the NT, or ride between states.)
- Your rides are longer, hillier or on rougher roads — bigger wheels and pedalling help.
- You want to carry shopping or a child, or ride for fitness as well as transport.
Costs and theft
Running costs are small for both — electricity is cents per charge. The costs that bite are tyres, brakes and eventually a battery: see e-scooter repair costs 及 e-bike service costs. Both are popular with thieves, so record the serial number the day you buy it.
Check if an e-scooter is legal(my state →)
Already decided? 查核電動單車 或 an e-scooter against your state’s rules, and check a used one’s serial before you pay.
常見問題
Is an e-scooter or an e-bike better for commuting?
For short, flat trips where you need to fold and carry it, an e-scooter is handy. For longer or hillier rides, or if you live(NSW or the NT where private e-scooters aren’t legal in public, an e-bike is usually the better choice.)
Are e-scooters legal(NSW?)
Not(public as of October 2026 — private e-scooters can only be ridden on private property in NSW. A compliant e-bike (250 W, or 500 W in NSW, assisting up to 25 km/h) is legal.)
