Only low-powered “motorised scooters” (200 W or less, 10 km/h or less) are legal sa public. Typical e-scooters are not. Here are the rules for privately owned e-scooters in the Northern Territory, in plain English. It is general information, not legal advice — check the official sources at the bottom before you buy or ride.

The short version

  • Only low-powered “motorised scooters” are legal sa public — 200 W or less and no faster than 10 km/h.
  • Most e-scooters sold today are more powerful, so sa the NT they count as non-complying motor vehicles and can’t be ridden on roads, paths or public places.
  • Helmet: Required — an approved bicycle helmet.
  • Hire scooters (Beam, Darwin) have their own conditions: 18+, 15 km/h, inside the operating area.

Many popular e-scooters are sold with a top speed of 30–100 km/h. In the Northern Territory a scooter that can go faster than 10 km/h isn’t a legal e-scooter — check it is locked to 10 km/h before you ride sa public.

Where you can ride, and how fast

SaanSpeed limit
Footpath10 km/h
Shared path / bike path10 km/h
Road10 km/h — roads with a limit of 50 km/h or less

A complying motorised scooter (200 W, 10 km/h max) can’t use roads over 50 km/h or roads with a dividing line or median. Anything more powerful is a “non-complying motor vehicle” and can’t be ridden on roads, paths or public places without an exemption.

Rider rules

  • Age: Not stated. (Hire scooters sa Darwin: 18+.)
  • Helmet: Required — an approved bicycle helmet.
  • Give way to pedestrians and keep left.
  • Riding a non-complying scooter can bring fines for an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, driving unlicensed and demerit points.

Fines

Official pages don’t list the amounts.

Hire e-scooters

Beam hire scooters sa Darwin (18+, 15 km/h, operating area only).

Buying one: safety standards and batteries

No NT-specific product or battery standard.

  • Check the top speed at weight against the Northern Territory’s limits before you pay — most fast scooters can’t be ridden legally here.
  • Buy from a seller who can tell you which safety standard it meets (AS/NZS 60335.2.114, EN 17128 or UL 2272) and give you a receipt.
  • Use the charger that came with it, and read our e-scooter battery safety guide.
  • Record its serial number now — see where to find it. If it’s stolen, that number is how police match it to you.
