E-bike or electric motorbike?
Some vehicles look like e-bikes but are electric motorcycles. On a Queensland road they need registration, insurance and a motorbike licence, and they aren’t allowed on paths at all. Warning signs when buying:
- Pedalling is optional, or the pedals are just for show.
- The throttle keeps working above 6 km/h.
- It is advertised as “unlockable”, “off-road mode” or faster than 25 km/h.
- The motor is rated above 250 W (500 W, 750 W, 1000 W…).
Since 1 July 2026 police can seize and destroy illegal devices, and the fine for a non-compliant bike is listed at $621. All fines.
