Seizure of illegal e-bikes

Since 1 July 2026, police can seize, impound and destroy illegal devices — for example bikes over 250 W, throttle bikes that go faster than 6 km/h on the throttle, or bikes that have been “unlocked”. Up to 30 August 2026, almost 400 illegal devices had been seized and 1,747 infringement notices issued.

How to avoid them

  • Check your bike is legal: Is my e-bike legal?
  • Ride at 12 km/h or less on footpaths and when passing people on shared paths. Path rules
  • Carry a licence (learner is enough) or ride under an exemption. Licence rules
