Do you need a licence to ride an e-bike in Queensland? (2026)

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer: yes. Since 31 August 2026, you must be 16 or older and hold a valid driver licence — a learner licence is the minimum — to ride an e-bike in public in Queensland. There are exemptions for supervised younger riders, recreational trails and some medical conditions.

Which licences count?

  • A Queensland learner, provisional or open driver licence.
  • An equivalent interstate or overseas licence — the Queensland Government says these are recognised.
  • Your licence must be current. You can’t ride if it is expired, suspended or disqualified.

You don’t need a special e-bike licence or a motorbike licence, and a legal e-bike doesn’t need registration or insurance. The e-bike itself still has to be legal — see Queensland e-bike laws.

Exemptions

  • Supervised riders aged 12 to 17 without a licence can ride with a parent, grandparent or legal guardian close enough to give instructions. More on under-16s.
  • Recreational riding areas with few pedestrians — for example rail trails, mountain bike trails and private bike parks — have no age or licence rule.
  • Medical or disability exemption for people 16+ who can’t hold a licence: the E-Mobility Driver Licence Exemption form (F5464), signed by a health professional who knows your history. You must carry the form and show it to police if asked. The certificate lasts five years, and there is a grace period until 30 November 2026.

What’s the fine?

Riding without a licence or exemption is a $518 fine, whether you’re over or under 16. Parents of under-16s riding illegally can also be fined $518. Bicycle and e-bike offences carry no demerit points. All Queensland e-bike fines.

Do I have to carry my licence?

The official pages we checked don’t say riders must carry their licence. If you ride under a medical exemption, you must carry the completed form.
