Can under-16s ride an e-bike in Queensland? Age rules explained (2026)

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer: from 31 August 2026 the minimum age to ride an e-bike in public in Queensland is 16, with a licence. Riders aged 12 to 17 without a licence can ride under supervision, and anyone can ride in designated recreational areas such as rail trails and mountain bike trails.

Supervised riding (12 to 17)

  • Riders aged 12 to 17 who don’t have a licence may ride when supervised.
  • The Queensland Government lists the supervisor as a parent, grandparent or legal guardian, close enough to give instructions. No distance in metres is set.
  • This covers under-16s who can’t get a learner licence yet, and 16–17 year olds who haven’t got one.

Where kids can ride without a licence

In recreational areas designed for riding where there are few pedestrians — the examples given are rail trails, mountain bike trails and private bike parks — the age and licence rules don’t apply. No official list of every designated area has been published yet. E-bike trails in Queensland.

Fines for parents

Since 1 July 2026, a parent or guardian can be fined $518 if their under-16 rides illegally — an illegal device, under age, or without a licence or exemption. Police can also seize and destroy illegal devices.

Buying an e-bike for a teenager

  • Since 1 July 2026, e-bikes and other e-mobility devices can’t be sold to anyone under 16 — including private and online sales. Sellers may ask for proof of age.
  • Buy a compliant bike: 250 W, motor help stops at 25 km/h, and an EN 15194 label (required from 1 March 2027). How to check.
  • Record its serial in a free Bike Passport — teenagers’ bikes are often the ones locked up at school and train stations.
