Short answer: the tyres don’t matter — the motor does. A fat tyre e-bike is legal on Queensland roads and paths when its motor is rated at no more than 250 W, assistance stops at 25 km/h, and any throttle works only up to 6 km/h. Many fat tyre e-bikes sold online go over those limits.

Fat tyre e-bikes are popular for their comfort and off-road look, and many are designed for markets with looser rules. They are often sold with 500 W, 750 W or 1000 W motors, a full-speed throttle, or an “unlockable” mode that lifts the speed limit. Any of those makes the bike an illegal device on Queensland roads and paths — even if it has pedals.
