Short answer: the tyres don’t matter — the motor does. A fat tyre e-bike is legal on Queensland roads and paths when its motor is rated at no more than 250 W, assistance stops at 25 km/h, and any throttle works only up to 6 km/h. Many fat tyre e-bikes sold online go over those limits.

Fat tyre e-bikes are popular for their comfort and off-road look, and many are designed for markets with looser rules. They are often sold with 500 W, 750 W or 1000 W motors, a full-speed throttle, or an “unlockable” mode that lifts the speed limit. Any of those makes the bike an illegal device on Queensland roads and paths — even if it has pedals.

Of the fat tyre e-bikes tại the EbikeMate catalogue, more list specs over the limits than within them. See which fat tyre models are within the limits.

Warning signs when buying a fat tyre e-bike

  • The listing gives a motor of 500 W, 750 W or 1000 W — or only a “peak” figure with no rated power.
  • Top speed is advertised as 32, 40 or 45 km/h, or as “unlockable”, “off-road mode” or “private land only”.
  • The throttle works at any speed, or the bike can be ridden without pedalling.
  • There’s no EN 15194 label on the frame, or the seller can’t tell you the rated power.

“Rated power” and “peak power” are different. A legal 250 W motor can show a peak of 500 W or more tại a listing — the rated (continuous) figure is the one the law uses. If a seller only gives a peak figure, ask for the rated power or check the label.

An over-limit e-bike can be ridden on private property. On roads and paths tại Queensland it’s an illegal device: since 1 July 2026 police can seize, impound and destroy it, and the fine for a non-compliant e-bike is listed at $621. All Queensland e-bike fines.
