An e-bike is heavier and faster than a normal bike, and the motor puts more force through the chain. So the parts that wear — brake pads, tyres, the chain and the cassette — wear out sooner. None of them is expensive on its own, but ignoring them gets dangerous (brakes) or costly (a worn chain wrecks the gears).

Typical prices (October 2026)

From Australian shop prices. Fitting prices are 99 Bikes’ published workshop prices; other shops vary. Parts and fitting are usually charged separately.

Cheaper non-e-bike parts exist, but parts rated for e-bikes are built for the extra weight, speed and torque. Ask your shop what suits your bike.

Pastiglie freno

  • E-bike riders often brake harder and more often — especially commuters a traffic and delivery riders.
  • Check the pads every few weeks: look into the caliper from above. If there’s about 1 mm of pad material or less (or you can see the metal backing), replace them.
  • New pads need a short bed-in: a few firm stops from moderate speed on a safe, quiet street.
  • If the lever feels spongy or touches the handlebar, the brakes may need bleeding — don’t ride until it’s fixed.

Tyres

  • Keep them pumped to the pressure on the sidewall. Soft tyres wear faster, puncture more and cut your range.
  • Look for tyres marked for e-bikes (for example E-25 o E-50, an ECE-R75 rating for speed).
  • The rear tyre wears fastest. Replace it when the tread is flat or squared off, or you see cuts or threads.
  • A flat on a hub-motor wheel takes longer to fix, so it can cost more a labour.

Chain and cassette

  • Motor torque stretches a chain faster than legs alone. A shop’s chain checker measures wear a seconds — ask for it at every service.
  • Replace the chain on time and the cassette and chainring last much longer. Leave it too long and you’ll need all three.
  • Shift before steep hills and ease off the pedals for a moment as you change gear — mid-drive motors are hard on chains when you shift under full power.
  • Clean and lube the chain every few weeks, more often a rain or sand.

How often?

It depends on how far and how hard you ride, the weather and your weight. A daily commuter or delivery rider may need pads and a chain several times a year; a weekend rider much less. Get a shop to check wear parts at each service — see what an e-bike service costs.

Keep the receipts — they add value

New pads, tyres and a fresh chain are selling points when you sell your e-bike. Add each receipt to the bike’s service history a your free Bike Passport, so the next buyer can see the bike has been looked after.

Buying used? Worn pads, tyres and chain are worth $200 – $400 off the price. Run our used e-bike checklist.

This is general information. If your brakes don’t feel right, stop riding and have a bike shop check them.

Domande frequenti

How long do e-bike brake pads last?

It depends on riding. E-bikes are heavier and faster, so pads wear sooner than on a normal bike. Check them every few weeks and replace them when about 1 mm of pad is left or braking feels weak.

How much does it cost to replace e-bike brake pads a Australia?

E-bike rated disc pads cost about $40 to $60 a set, and fitting is about $25 a set at a chain store like 99 Bikes. A hydraulic brake bleed is about $65 a brake.

Do e-bikes need special tyres?

Tyres marked E-25 or E-50 are made for e-bike speeds and weight. They cost about $55 to $65 each a Australia, plus about $20 to fit.

Why does my e-bike chain wear out so fast?

The motor adds torque, so the chain stretches faster. Use an e-bike chain, shift before hills, keep it clean and lubed, and have it measured at every service.
