Queensland: 16 and a licence

Since 31 August 2026, Queensland e-bike riders must be 16 or older and hold at least a learner licence. There are exemptions — for example supervised younger riders and riders who can’t hold a licence for medical reasons. Rail trails and mountain bike trails are exempt. See Queensland e-bike laws.

Western Australia: 16

Riders under 16 can’t use an e-bike with the power assistance engaged. WA e-bike laws.

NSW and SA: watch this space

NSW announced in February 2026 that it would set a minimum age between 12 and 16; the age and start date had not been confirmed by October 2026. South Australia’s 2026 review asked whether to introduce a minimum age or a learner’s permit. NSW e-bike laws · SA e-bike laws.

Buying an e-bike for a teenager

  • Check your state’s age rule first — in Queensland and WA, an under-16 can’t ride on public roads with the motor working.
  • Choose a legal pedal-assist bike (250 W, 25 km/h). High-powered “e-motos” sold as e-bikes can be seized.
  • A good helmet, lights and a proper lock.
  • Record the serial in a free Bike Passport — teen e-bikes are a common theft target.
