An error code on your e-bike’s display usually means the system has found a problem and has cut or reduced the motor assistance to protect itself. Many codes clear after a restart or a simple check. Some mean a part needs a workshop. This guide covers the codes riders see most on Bosch, Shimano and Bafang systems, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to stop and book a service.
First: the 2-minute restart that fixes many codes
- Stop somewhere safe and turn the system off.
- Take the battery out, check the contacts are clean and dry, and put it back until it clicks.
- Check the plugs you can see (display, speed sensor) are pushed in, and the spoke magnet is lined up with the sensor.
- Turn it back on with your feet off the pedals — torque sensors set themselves at start-up (Shimano’s W013 is often this).
- If the code is gone, ride on — but note the code and the date. If it comes back, book a workshop.
You can always ride an e-bike without assistance. Bosch’s manual says that after a drive-unit shutdown you can keep riding unassisted, but should have the bike checked before further trips.
Stop riding and charging straight away if…
- the battery is hot, swollen, leaking, smoking or smells of burning, or a battery error appears while charging — unplug the charger only if it’s safe to. If it smokes or catches fire, get everyone out and call Triple Zero (000); don’t touch it or breathe the fumes. See e-bike battery fire safety.
- you see heat damage, melted plastic or water inside a connector.
- the brakes, steering or frame feel wrong after a crash.
Never open a battery or a drive unit yourself.
Bosch (Intuvia, Purion, Nyon — classic system)
From the error table — Bosch eBike Systems’ Intuvia operating instructions. Newer Bosch ਵਿੱਚ smart system bikes (Kiox 300/500, Purion 200, LED Remote) show different, longer codes — look them up — the Bosch eBike Help Center. ਵਿੱਚ
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| 410 / 418 | A button on the display or controller is stuck | Clean dirt from the buttons |
| 414 / 422 / 423 | Connection problem (controller, drive unit or battery) | Have the connections checked — workshop |
| 430 | The display’s own battery is flat | Charge the display (in its holder or by USB) |
| 500 / 511 | Internal drive unit fault | Restart; if it returns, Bosch dealer |
| 502 | Bike light fault | Check the light and wiring, restart |
| 503 | Speed sensor fault | Restart and check the magnet; if it returns, workshop |
| 504 | Speed signal distorted (assistance reduced) | Re-align the spoke magnet; check the bike hasn’t been modified |
| 530 | Battery fault | Turn off, reseat the battery, restart; if it returns, workshop |
| 540 / 605 | Drive unit or battery too hot or too cold | Turn off and let it reach a normal temperature |
| 550 | Something is drawing too much power | Unplug accessories and restart |
| 602 / 610 / 640 / 655 | Battery fault (internal, voltage or multiple) | Restart or reseat; if it returns, workshop |
| 620 | Charger fault | Stop using that charger; see a dealer |
| 656 | Software version problem | Dealer software update |
Code 504 is linked to speed tampering (“tuning”). A tuned e-bike is not legal on public roads — Australia and can void the warranty — see ਵਿੱਚ ਸਟੇਟ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਈ-ਬਾਈਕ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ.
Shimano STEPS / EP
Shimano splits its codes into two kinds:
- W (warning) — a temporary problem. If conditions improve the warning clears; if it doesn’t, contact the place of purchase.
- E (error) — a possible malfunction. Turn the power off (or remove the battery) to reset. If the error is still there when you turn it back on, Shimano says to stop using the bike and see the place of purchase or a dealer.
Common codes — meanings from Shimano’s official error list; “what you can do” is EbikeMate’s plain-English advice:
| Code | Shimano says | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| W010 | High temperature detected — the drive unit ਵਿੱਚ | Stop and let the motor cool; use a lower assist mode on long climbs |
| W011 | No speed signal from the speed sensor | Re-align the spoke magnet and sensor; reseat the plug |
| W013 | Sensor initialization could not be completed normally | Restart with your feet off the pedals |
| W020 | Battery temperature outside its operating range | Let it cool — the shade, or warm up indoors ਵਿੱਚ |
| E010 | Abnormality detected — the drive unit ਵਿੱਚ | Restart; if it stays, stop using it — dealer |
| E014 / E050 | Abnormal speed signal from the speed sensor | Check the magnet and sensor; if it stays, workshop |
| E020 | Communication error between battery and drive unit | Reseat the battery and check the contacts; if it stays, workshop |
| E021 / E022 | Battery not supported by the system | Use the battery made for your system — dealer |
| E023 | Electrical abnormality — the battery ਵਿੱਚ | Stop using the battery — dealer |
| E024 | Battery overcurrent protection | Restart; if it stays, dealer |
| E025 | Battery doesn’t recognise the drive unit | Check the battery is seated and cables connected; dealer |
| E013 / E033 / E043 | Firmware problem | Dealer firmware update |
| E299 | Drive unit — Safe Mode because tampering was detected ਵਿੱਚ | Remove any tuning device; dealer |
| E925 | Battery and charger are not compatible | Use the charger made for your battery |
Look up any other code on Shimano’s list (si.shimano.com/en/error). Shimano notes that codes — its dealer software can differ from what your display or app shows. ਵਿੱਚ
Bafang (many budget and conversion e-bikes)
Bafang codes vary by display and controller — check the manual that came with your display. These are the commonly reported meanings, not an official list:
| Code | Commonly means | Try |
|---|---|---|
| 05 | Throttle not returning to zero | Check the throttle isn’t sticking; reseat its plug |
| 08 | Motor hall sensor signal | Workshop — check the motor plug for water or corrosion |
| 09 | Motor phase wire fault | Workshop — check the main cable for damage |
| 10 | Motor too hot | Stop and let it cool; use lower assist on climbs |
| 21 | ਸਪੀਡ ਸੈਂਸਰ | Re-align the spoke magnet and sensor; reseat the plug |
| 30 | Communication fault (often the display cable) | Reseat the display and main cable plugs |
Other brands
Many brands use their own displays over these motors (Giant, Specialized, Himiway, Lekker and others). Your bike’s manual or the brand’s support page is the right source. Find your bike’s brand page.
When to book a workshop
- the same code comes back after a restart and the basic checks
- any Shimano E-code that survives a restart
- battery or charger codes that repeat
- motor, sensor or communication codes after rain, washing or a crash
Tell the workshop the exact code, when it appears (start-up, climbing, charging) and what you’ve tried — it saves diagnostic time. Brand-name systems need dealer software to read codes and update firmware; see what an e-bike service costs. If the range has dropped too, read battery health explained before you pay for a new battery.

ਆਮ ਸਵਾਲ
Can I still ride my e-bike with an error code?
Usually yes, without motor assistance. Don’t ride if the code relates to a hot, damaged or swollen battery, or if the brakes or steering feel wrong. Get codes that keep coming back checked by a workshop.
Will a restart clear an e-bike error code?
Often, for temporary faults such as a speed sensor or temperature warning. If the code comes back after a restart, the cause is still there and the bike needs a check.
Does an error code void my warranty?
No. But opening the motor or battery yourself, or fitting a tuning device, can. Go to an authorised dealer for your motor brand for warranty work.
Where do I find what my e-bike error code means?
In your bike’s manual, the Bosch eBike Help Center for Bosch, Shimano’s error list at si.shimano.com for Shimano, or your display’s manual for Bafang and other systems.
