The rules sa Melbourne

  • Legal e-bikes: up to 250 W (EPAC), assistance to 25 km/h, throttle only to 6 km/h. No licence needed for a compliant e-bike. Victoria e-bike laws

  • Footpaths: riders 13 and older can’t ride on the footpath unless accompanying someone under 13.

Taking your e-bike on public transport

  • Trains: factory-built e-bikes are allowed — switched off, not ridden or charged on board. No peak ban, but avoid peak times and don’t use the first door of the first carriage.
  • Converted e-bikes are banned on metro and regional trains and sa ticketed areas.
  • Trams and buses: folding bikes only (no bigger than 82 × 69 × 39 cm); some bus routes have racks.
