E-biking on the Gold Coast: rules, trains and bikeways (2026)

Everything an e-bike rider on the Gold Coast needs in one place — checked against official Queensland and local sources in October 2026. Rules change, so the sources are linked at the bottom.

The rules on the Gold Coast

  • Legal e-bikes: 250 W maximum, motor help stops at 25 km/h, throttle only to 6 km/h, and an EN 15194 compliance label (or Legacy EPAC label) required from 1 March 2027. Label rules
  • Since 31 August 2026 riders must be 16+ with at least a learner licence, except supervised 12–17 year olds and on rail trails and MTB trails. Licence rules

Taking your e-bike on public transport

  • Trains: any time, first or last carriage of six-car trains, max two bikes per carriage. No hire e-bikes. Details
  • Buses and the G:link light rail: no bikes, unless folded into a bag no bigger than 90 × 70 × 36 cm.

Main bikeways and paths

  • Gold Coast Oceanway — planned as a continuous 36 km coastal path from The Spit to Coolangatta; about two-thirds is built.
  • Pacific Motorway (M1) South upgrade — a new dedicated 10 km active transport path from Varsity Lakes to Elanora.
  • Coomera Connector — a 45 km corridor between the Logan Motorway and Nerang that will include an active transport path.

Secure bike parking

  • Bike sheds along the G:link light rail, including Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Southport and Broadbeach South.
  • Queensland Rail bike lockers and enclosures at SEQ stations — free with a $50 deposit, 18+.

Common questions

Do you need a licence to ride an e-bike on the Gold Coast?

Yes. Since 31 August 2026 Queensland riders must be 16 or older and hold at least a learner licence, with exemptions for supervised 12–17 year olds, rail trails and MTB trails, and some medical conditions.

Can you take an e-bike on the train on the Gold Coast?

Yes, at any time on Translink trains — first or last carriage of six-car trains, maximum two bikes per carriage. Not on buses or trams.

Can you take an e-bike on the G:link tram?

No. Bikes aren’t allowed on trams or buses unless folded into a bag no bigger than 90 × 70 × 36 cm.
