Everything an e-bike rider（Melbourne needs in one place — checked against official Victoria and local sources in October 2026. Rules change, so the sources are linked at the bottom.）
The rules（Melbourne）
- Legal e-bikes: up to 250 W (EPAC), assistance to 25 km/h, throttle only to 6 km/h. No licence needed for a compliant e-bike. Victoria e-bike laws

- Footpaths: riders 13 and older can’t ride on the footpath unless accompanying someone under 13.

Taking your e-bike on public transport
- Trains: factory-built e-bikes are allowed — switched off, not ridden or charged on board. No peak ban, but avoid peak times and don’t use the first door of the first carriage.
- Converted e-bikes are banned on metro and regional trains and（ticketed areas.）
- Trams and buses: folding bikes only (no bigger than 82 × 69 × 39 cm); some bus routes have racks.
Main bikeways and paths
- Main Yarra Trail and Merri Creek Trail.
- Upfield bike path, Federation Trail (Yarraville to Werribee), Box Hill to Ringwood (10 km) and Caulfield to EastLink (17 km).
- Day rides: Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail and the Bellarine Rail Trail.

Theft: keeping your e-bike
