How police are enforcing it

In the first three months of the new laws, police seized 558 non-compliant e-bikes and e-scooters and issued 2,486 infringement notices — more than 1,500 for not wearing a helmet and 157 for speeding — and caught 68 drink riders from 878 roadside breath tests (Queensland Government, 2 October 2026). If yours is seized: how to get a seized e-scooter back.

How to avoid them

  • Make sure the scooter itself is legal: no faster than 25 km/h, 60 kg or less. Free e-scooter legal check
  • Carry a licence (learner is enough) or ride under an exemption. Licence and age rules
  • Ride at 12 km/h or less on footpaths and when passing people on shared paths, and stay off roads over 60 km/h. Where you can ride
  • Helmet on, phone in a handlebar mount, lights at night, nobody on the back.
