The short version

  • Hire scooters: Brisbane has two operators, Lime and Neuron, with up to 7,100 shared e-bikes and e-scooters across the CBD and inner suburbs (Brisbane City Council).
  • Who can ride: since 31 August 2026, riders must be 16+ with at least a learner licence (overseas licences are recognised), unless an exemption applies. Licence rules
  • Speed: 12 km/h on most footpaths, 25 km/h on separated paths and bikeways, and roads only up to a 60 km/h limit.
  • Helmet always — hire scooters come with one. Fine for no helmet: $518.
  • Your own scooter must not be able to go faster than 25 km/h and must weigh 60 kg or less. Check yours

Hiring a Lime or Neuron scooter

  1. Download the operator’s app, register and find a scooter.
  2. Check the brakes and equipment before you ride, and wear the helmet provided.
  3. Park in a designated e-mobility hub where there is one nearby, following the app’s instructions; otherwise park where it won’t block footpaths, roads or emergency equipment.
  4. End the session in the app.

Shared-scooter riders must be 16 or older. Hire companies have until March 2027 to take reasonable steps to check riders’ age and licence (ABC News, 30 August 2026).

Brisbane’s big bikeways — the Bicentennial, V1 Veloway and Kedron Brook — are shared or separated paths, so slow to 12 km/h wherever people are walking. All path and road rules

Parking and theft

  • Brisbane City Council provides scooter parking racks: put the scooter’s neck into the top of the rack and lock it. Hire scooters go in hubs, not private racks.
  • Lock it to something solid every time, take the key or app access with you, and bring it inside overnight.
  • Write down the serial number now. If it’s stolen — or seized — the serial, a receipt and photos of you with it are how you prove it’s yours. A free E-scooter Passport keeps them together.
  • Buying second-hand on Marketplace or Gumtree? Check the serial isn’t reported stolen before you pay.

Taking it on the train, bus or ferry

Rules for taking e-scooters on public transport differ from bikes and change often — read e-scooters on public transport before you travel.

Repairs and 25 km/h checks

Every e-scooter in Queensland must be locked to 25 km/h by 28 February 2027. Find an e-scooter workshop in Brisbane for repairs or a speed-limit check.
