Riding on a prohibited road is a $518 fine. On paths, keep left, give way to pedestrians and warn them as you approach — not giving way is $172.

Places you can’t ride

  • Anywhere with a “personal mobility devices prohibited” sign or marking — $207 fine.
  • Councils and landowners can ban e-scooters in places like malls, esplanades and jetties — look for signs.
  • The pedestrian side of a separated path ($172).

Rules while you ride

  • Helmet: an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet, fastened ($518).
  • Lights at night or in poor visibility: white front and red rear light visible from 200 m, and a red rear reflector visible from 50 m ($172).
  • Bell or horn if your scooter has handlebars, and working brakes ($172 each).
  • Phone: you can’t hold it or rest it on your body, even switched off ($1,295). A handlebar mount for GPS or speed is fine.
  • Alcohol: under 0.05. Police can breath test riders on roads, paths and public places.
  • No passengers ($518). A rider 16+ may tow a child under 10 in a proper PMD trailer, with the child in a helmet.
  • Don’t hold on to or get towed by a vehicle, and don’t lead a pet while riding ($172).
  • Red lights and other road rules apply to you too ($690 for a red light).

In Brisbane
