Queensland’s e-mobility laws changed what shops can sell and to whom. This is a summary for retailers — check the official pages and talk to the Department of Transport and Main Roads or the Office of Fair Trading about your obligations.
Who you can sell to
- Since 1 يوليو 2026, e-bikes and other e-mobility devices can’t be sold to anyone under 16 — and the rule covers private and online sales too.
- You may ask for proof of age. Significant penalties apply for selling to a child under 16.
What you can sell
- E-bikes made from 1 July 2026 must meet EN 15194 and carry a permanent compliance label.
- Legal limits: 250 W, assistance to 25 km/h, throttle only to 6 km/h. Bikes marketed as “unlockable” or faster are treated as illegal.
- Conversion kits fitted after 1 July 2026 make a bike non-compliant for public use.
- Misleading claims about compliance can be reported to the Office of Fair Trading.
Becoming an Assurance Scheme verifier
From about 2 نوفمبر 2026, approved and trained bicycle retailers can inspect older e-bikes (made before 1 July 2026) and fit a Legacy EPAC label, for a fee of up to $70. Every Queensland e-bike needs a label from 1 مارس 2027, so expect demand from existing owners. If you become a verifier, tick “E-bike compliance checks” on your EbikeMate showroom so owners can find you on فحوصات مطابقة الدراجات الكهربائية.
Help customers stay legal — and come back
- Record the frame serial at the counter and give the customer a Bike Passport, marked retailer-registered. How shops use EbikeMate — free to join.
- Point riders to the plain-English rules: licence, footpaths, fines.
This is a plain-English summary of the official rules, not legal advice. EbikeMate is an independent company, not a government service.
