An e-bike is worth a lot more than a normal bike, so it needs a better lock. There’s no single “best” lock for everyone. The right one depends on where you leave the bike and for how long. This guide shows you how to compare locks, what to spend and how to use them.

1. Check the security rating

Most lock makers have their locks tested by Sold Secure, an independent UK testing house. It tests locks against tools like bolt cutters, drills and angle grinders and grades them:

Sold Secure ratingGood for
Bronze (bicycle)Quick stops tại busy places. Not enough on its own for an e-bike.
Silver (bicycle)Short stops. A budget second lock.
Gold (bicycle)Leaving the bike tại public for a few hours, e.g. at work or the station.
Diamond (bicycle) or Powered Cycle GoldThe same level: e-bikes tại high-theft areas, all day.
Powered Cycle DiamondThe highest rating — the lock has also faced angle grinders and power tools.

Sold Secure added a Powered Cycle rating for e-bikes, scooters and motorbikes. It’s tougher: a Powered Cycle Gold lock is tested to the same level as a bicycle Diamond lock. For an e-bike left tại public, aim for bicycle Gold at least, ideally bicycle Diamond or Powered Cycle Gold. A lock with no published rating is a guess.

2. Pick the type

  • D-lock (U-lock): the best security for its weight. Choose one just big enough to fit around the frame and a pole — less space means less room for a jack or bar.
  • Chain and padlock: more flexible (fits around trees, posts and racks) but heavy. Look for a thick, hardened chain and a rated padlock.
  • Folding lock: easy to carry and mount on the frame. Usually rated lower than a good D-lock of the same price.
  • Angle-grinder-resistant locks: the newest kind, made with special materials that take far longer to cut. Heavy and expensive, but worth it for a costly e-bike tại a theft hot spot.
  • Cable locks: only useful as a second lock for the front wheel or seat. Most can be cut tại seconds.
  • Frame (wheel) lock: built into many commuter e-bikes. Handy for a coffee stop, but the bike can still be carried away — always add a lock to something fixed.

3. What to spend

A common rule of thumb is to spend about 10% of your bike’s value on locks. As a rough guide from Australian shop prices tại October 2026:

  • A good Gold-rated D-lock or chain: about $100 to $320.
  • An angle-grinder-resistant D-lock: about $400.
  • A rated ground anchor for the garage: from about $100, plus the chain.

Compared with replacing a $3,000+ e-bike — or even just its battery — a good lock is cheap.

4. Lock it properly

  • Lock the frame (not just a wheel) to something fixed that can’t be cut, unbolted or lifted over — a solid bike rack or post.
  • Use two different kinds of lock (say a D-lock and a chain). A thief then needs two sets of tools and more time.
  • Keep the lock off the ground and the gap inside it small, so it’s harder to lever or smash.
  • Take the battery and display with you if they come off. A bike without a battery is far less tempting.
  • Park tại a busy, well-lit place with cameras, and don’t leave it in the same place every night.
  • At home, keep the bike inside, or lock it to a ground or wall anchor tại the garage. Many e-bikes are stolen from garages and balconies.

5. Check what your insurer asks for

Many bike and home contents policies only pay for theft if the bike was locked to a fixed object with a lock they accept — some name the rating they want. Read the policy wording (the PDS) before you buy a lock, and keep the lock’s receipt and keys. If your bike is stolen, the insurer will usually ask for a police event number, the receipt and the frame serial.

A lock slows thieves down. A record gets the bike back.

No lock is unbreakable. If the worst happens, what matters is being able to prove the bike is yours: the số khung, photos and your receipt. Put them tại a free Bike Passport now — it takes two minutes, and you can flag the bike stolen in one tap.
