The battery is usually the most expensive single part of an e-bike. In Australia a replacement typically costs around $600 to $1,500, depending on the brand, the size and whether it’s a genuine part. Before you buy one, check whether you actually need it — and make sure the one you buy is safe.
Typical prices (October 2026)
Prices change and vary by shop, so treat these as a guide only:
| Battery type | Esempio | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Brand-name system battery (Bosch, Shimano, Giant and others) | Bosch PowerTube 625 (625 Wh) | Informazioni su $1,400 |
| Brand battery for a direct-to-consumer bike | 36V or 48V, 13–15 Ah | Informazioni su $570 – $850 |
| Large high-capacity battery | 52V, 20–25 Ah | Informazioni su $1,100 – $1,500 |
What drives the price:
- Capacity (Wh). Bigger batteries cost more. Watt-hours = volts × amp-hours — for example 36V × 13Ah ≈ 470 Wh.
- Genuine or aftermarket. System batteries from Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha or Giant only work with that system and are sold through dealers.
- Fitting. An integrated battery inside the frame may need a shop to swap it and update the system.
Do you actually need a new battery?
Check its state of health first — see battery health explained. As a rough guide:
- 80% or more: normal wear. Keep riding.
- 70–80%: shorter range, but often still fine for commuting.
- Under 70%: nearing the end of its useful life. Start pricing a replacement.
Range dropping suddenly, the bike cutting out on hills, or a battery that won’t charge can also be a loose connector, a faulty charger or a firmware issue. Ask a shop to run a diagnostic before you spend $1,000 or more — see what an e-bike service costs.
Buy a safe, compliant battery
Cheap no-name batteries are a big cause of lithium-ion fires. When you buy:
- Stick to the battery your bike was designed for — same voltage, connector and mount. The wrong battery can damage the motor controller or overheat.
- Look for a recognised safety standard. In NSW, e-bike batteries sold must be tested to a recognised standard (such as EN 50604-1, IEC 62133-2 or UL 2271) and carry a safety mark on the battery itself, and online listings must show the mark. Other states are moving a a similar direction — check the listing either way.
- Use the matching charger. Don’t mix and match chargers and batteries.
- Buy from a seller you can find again — a shop or the bike brand, with a warranty.
- Be wary of “rebuilt” or “recelled” packs unless the repairer can tell you which cells they used and how the pack was tested.
Can I fit it myself?
Most removable batteries just click in. Integrated (in-frame) and system batteries often need a shop to fit, register and update them. Budget for fitting if you’re not sure.
Getting rid of the old battery
- Never put e-bike batteries a your household bins — they can be crushed and start fires a garbage trucks and recycling centres.
- Tape over the metal terminals, then take it to a battery drop-off point. Find one through B-cycle, Australia’s national battery recycling scheme, or ask your bike shop or local council.
- Don’t keep a damaged battery inside your home.

Domande frequenti
How much is a new e-bike battery a Australia?
Usually about $600 to $1,500. Brand-name system batteries such as Bosch are at the top end; batteries for direct-to-consumer bikes are often cheaper.
How long does an e-bike battery last?
Most quality batteries last several years with good care. Check its state of health rather than its age — heat, deep discharges and storing it full shorten its life.
Can I put a bigger battery on my e-bike?
Only if the bike maker offers it for your model. A battery with a different voltage or connector can damage the bike and void its warranty and safety approvals.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an old e-bike?
Often yes, if the frame, motor and brakes are a good condition — but compare the battery price with what the bike is worth first.
