E-biking in Adelaide: rules, trains and bikeways (2026)

The rules in Adelaide

  • Legal e-bikes: up to 250 W (EPAC) with a 25 km/h cut-off, or 200 W for other power-assisted bikes. Helmet required. SA e-bike laws
  • Footpaths: cyclists of all ages may ride on footpaths.

Taking your e-bike on public transport

  • Trains only: e-bikes can go on trains (in an empty wheelchair space); modified e-bikes are not permitted. No bikes on buses or trams.
  • Bikes travel free off-peak; a peak concession fare applies on weekdays before 9am and 3–6pm. E-scooters aren’t allowed on any service.

Main bikeways and paths

  • Outer Harbor Greenway (20 km), Levels–City Bikeway (18 km, North Adelaide to Mawson Lakes) and Coast Park (a 70 km linear park from North Haven to Sellicks Beach).
  • Mike Turtur Bikeway, following the tramline from the city to Glenelg.
  • Day rides: Coast to Vines Rail Trail and the Barossa Trail.

Secure bike parking

  • Adelaide Metro bike cages are free for registered metroCARD users; lockers need a $50 deposit.

Theft: keeping your e-bike

South Australia Police recorded 3,074 bicycle thefts statewide in 2024/25, and 3,087 in 2023/24 (SAPOL FOI release).
