E-biking in Canberra: rules, trains and bikeways (2026)

The rules in Canberra

  • Two legal types: power-assisted pedal cycles up to 200 W, and EPACs up to 250 W cutting out at 25 km/h. ACT e-bike laws
  • Bikes and legal e-bikes may ride on footpaths and shared paths, keeping left and giving way to pedestrians.

Taking your e-bike on public transport

  • Buses: over 90% have racks for two bikes (max 25 kg each); drivers can’t help load.
  • Light rail: four bike racks per vehicle, and bikes must use them.

Lime has run shared e-bikes and e-scooters in Canberra since April 2026, replacing Neuron.
