E-biking in Darwin: rules, trains and bikeways (2026)

The rules in Darwin

  • Legal e-bikes: EPACs (EN 15194) up to 250 W and 25 km/h, or 200 W for other power-assisted bikes. NT e-bike laws
  • Helmets: riders 17 and under must always wear one. Over 17, a helmet isn’t required on footpaths and paths — only on the road.
  • On paths keep left and give way to pedestrians.

Taking your e-bike on public transport

  • Buses: conventional bikes aren’t allowed; a bike must fit in the luggage rack.

Main bikeways and paths

  • About 70 km of on-road cycleways and shared paths across the City of Darwin.
  • Darwin coastal shared paths (City – East Point – Nightcliff – Casuarina) and the Lee Point Road shared path.

Secure bike parking

  • Secure bike enclosures at Casuarina, Palmerston, Coolalinga and Humpty Doo (paid access key, 18+), and the Bike Pod on Smith Street in the CBD with lockers and showers.

Theft: keeping your e-bike
